Between them, Brendan O’Donoghue and his father John have had well over 40 years combined experience in the airconditioning and refrigeration industry. After starting an apprenticeship in refrigeration in 1994, and gaining on-the-job know-how in other companies, Brendan joined forces with his dad in 2000 to start BJ Cooling and Refrigeration from a single room and garage at home.

Today, BJ Cooling employs some 60 people, and their client list includes several major petrol companies, large supermarkets such as Pick n Pay and Spar as well as banks and fast-food outlets. They also have a branch in Cape Town as well as Zambia.

Training a key to success

So what’s the secret of their success? Says Brendan: “Training is one key. Last year we spent R450 000 on training our technicians. Our reputation rests on their work, so every morning we have a technical staff get-together where we follow up the progress of each and every job. We even have our own uniform so our guys look smart & presentable.”

Some of the larger jobs tackled by BJ Cooling have been unusual ones such as converting the old Carlton Skyrink into a TV studio where programmes such as 7de Laan are currently filmed.

Randfontein Clinic

Another job undertaken by the company was a Clinic in Randfontein with a tender issued by the Department of Infrastructure. Motheo Construction Group were the builders, and working from plan and a bill of quantities, BJ Cooling did the HVAC design specifying Samsung DVM units. 4 outdoor DVM-S condensers totalling 170KW were used, while 34 Samsung cassettes and midwall splits ensured an ideal indoor environment. The project was done in phases as the building was being constructed. As each section was completed, BJ Cooling would move in and install the units. The client has since been completely happy with the results of the installation.

Fourways back-up

When quizzed as to why he selected Samsung DVM units, Brendan’s answer was emphatic: “It’s the back-up provided by Fourways Airconditioning. They supply the stock precisely when we need it, they’re always ready to provide assistance whenever necessary and they also help with the commissioning of the DVM units. Should we need them, parts are also always available. “And,” he adds with a grin, “Their marketing is phenomenal.
